Head & Face Protection

Generally, in any industrial working environment, factory, laboratory or food processing unit, appropriate headgear should be worn.

In environments where you are at risk from falling objects or overhanging machinery, safety helmets or bump caps are essential. If you’re working with certain chemicals, gases and materials that have the potential to come into contact with your face, you may require greater protection.

Choosing the right head and face protection

  • Always wear a safety helmet, hat or bump cap that fits your head
  • Make sure it’s comfortable to wear and not too tight
  • Wear the right helmet/hat for the job
  • Always choose compatible safety accessories such as eye/face shields, neck flaps or earmuffs
  • Always check for any damage, wear and weak areas before use

EN 397 - Industry Safety Helmets

This European standard specifies physical and performance requirements of industrial safety helmets – they are intended primarily to provide protection to the wearer against falling objects and consequential brain injury and skull fracture.

The standard ensures consistency and states requirements across the following:

  • Physical requirements such as materials and construction, wearing height and ventilation
  • Performance requirements such as shock absorption, resistance to penetration and flame-resistance

EN 175 – Equipment for Eye and Face Protection During Welding and Allied Processes

This European standard specifies safety requirements and test methods for personal protective equipment used to protect the operator’s eyes and face against harmful optical radiation and other specific risks or hazards in usual welding, cutting or similar operations. This standard specifies protection including ergonomic aspects against risks or hazards of radiative, flammable, mechanical and electrical nature. The equipment is designed to incorporate protective filters, with or without cover/backing oculars.

The standard ensures consistency and states requirements across the following:

  • Welding protector housings shall provide at least the same protection against radiation as that given by the darkest filters declared usable by the manufacturer or supplier
  • Ventilation, where provided, shall be such that the intended protection shall not be affected
  • Dimensions of the visible aperture of the welding spectacles and goggles, minimum dimensions are met
  • Light reflective and attenuation, electrical insulation and ignition-resistance qualities are assessed
  • Resistance to hot penetration and corrosion meet minimum requirements
