BOC Food Fresh

Products & Applications

BOC Food Fresh gases are used for a variety of purposes in the food industry. Gases can be used as additives, processing aids or ingredients in contact with food. Current and proposed European legislation requires that foods, including gases supplied to the food industry, meet increasingly rigorous standards to ensure food safety. In particular they have to meet criteria regarding labelling, purity and hygiene.

BOC Industrial provides a range of Food Fresh gases in liquid, gaseous or solid form. These include gases for Modified Atmosphere Packaging (MAP), carbon dioxide for beverage carbonation, nitrogen for sparging of edible oils and fats, as well as nitrogen inerting for pharmaceutical use to protect fragile products against oxidation. BOC Food Fresh products have enhanced laboratory appearance and are readily traceable. Supply modes include compressed cylinder gases, mini-bulk or bulk liquid and, in the case of carbon dioxide, solid dry ice.

Products

BOC Food Fresh describes the variety of gases, gas mixtures and services that bring the benefits of food-specific gases to food suppliers. The range of gases and gas mixtures undergoes thorough procedural controls and quality assurance throughout the production process to guarantee product quality.

BOC Food Fresh gases are delivered either as gases or gas mixtures in high-pressure cylinders dedicated for use in food-related industries, or as high-purity liquid in stainless steel cryogenic containers.

Gases for food use include carbon dioxide, oxygen and nitrogen.

Applications

BOC Food Fresh is a complete offering of food-grade atmospheres and services specifically created for the processing and packaging of beverages and foodstuffs. It provides the best way of ensuring that products are safely packaged in order to reach the consumer in optimum condition.

Each Food Fresh gas has its own unique properties for food preservation. Every food product, however complex, has its own ideal atmosphere. BOC Industrial can advise on the correct gas or mixture and the most appropriate equipment for your particular product.

Modified Atmosphere Packaging (MAP) is food packaging in which earth’s normal atmosphere has been modified in some way. Usually combined with lowered temperatures, it is a highly effective method of extending the shelf-life of food. MAP mainly involves the use of three gases – carbon dioxide, nitrogen and oxygen. Food products are packed in various combinations of these three gases depending on the physical and chemical properties of the food.

Food-grade gases can be used in a number of applications in the beverage industry. The main use within production plants is the use of carbon dioxide for carbonation. Other applications include the use of nitrogen or carbon dioxide for de-aeration, undercover gassing and filler counter pressurisation.

Food Fresh oxygen is one of the key parameters in aquaculture. The availability of oxygen in water has a direct effect on fish-farm performance and can be used to oxygenate basins during fish rearing and bins during the transportation of live fish.

BOC Food Fresh nitrogen and carbon dioxide can be used to deoxygenate and make inert liquids such as fruit juices, wine, beer, oils and fats to improve products’ shelf-life.
