Safety Hazards
Several safety hazards are associated with MMA welding
These include:
- Electrical shock, from incorrect wiring or due to poor earthing
- Emission of particulate fume
- With stainless steel electrodes, the chrome in the welding fume is the hazardous Hexavalent chromium (Cr+6) type
- Arc burns can be caused by exposure to high levels of UV and IR radiation
- Burns can also be caused by hot metal ejected from the welding process
The level and exact nature of these hazards will change as the welding material and consumables being used change.
It is important that precautions be taken to ensure that each hazard be considered individually and that appropriate action be taken to minimise its effects.
If fume extraction is required, it should be sufficient to fully remove the hazardous material.
It is also important that the correct personal protective equipment (PPE) is worn whenever appropriate.
