Eye Protection

Your sight is one of your most important assets and is particularly vulnerable to short- and long-term damage. When it comes to protecting your eyes, this is one area that should never be compromised or taken for granted.

Eye damage can be caused by the simplest of things such as dust, sparks, bright artificial light, sunlight, chemical splashes and splinters from wood and metal. Modern safety glasses, goggles and welding masks are ergonomically designed for comfort and are made from tough, light and durable materials.

Choosing the right eye protection

  • Always wear glasses or goggles that fit your face and are comfortable to wear – not too tight or loose
  • Wear the right eye protection for the job
  • Make sure you have good and wide vision
  • If at risk from anything coming into contact with your eyes, wear goggles or all-round safety spectacles
  • Always check for any damage to lenses before use

EN 379 – Personal Eye Protection – Automatic Welding Filters

This European standard specifies requirements for automatic welding filters and applies if such a filter is to be used for continuous viewing of the welding process, (including gas welding and cutting), and if it is to be used only during the period when the arc is being ignited.

The standard ensures consistency and states requirements across the following:

  • Spherical, astigmatic and prismatic refractive powers, luminous and spectral transmittance
  • Diffusion of light, quality of material manufactured from and robustness of construction
  • Resistance to ultraviolet radiation and ignition

EN 166 – Personal Eye Protection

This European standard applies to all types of personal eye-protectors used against various hazards in the workplace and other environments that are likely to damage the eye.

Not applicable to nuclear radiation, X-rays, laser beams and low-temperature infrared (IR) radiation emitted by low-temperature sources.

The requirements of this standard do not apply to eye-protectors for which separate and complete standards exist, such as laser eye-protectors, sunglasses for general use, etc. unless such standards make specific reference to this standard.

The requirements of this standard apply to oculars for welding and allied processes but do not apply to equipment for eye and face protection for welding and allied processes, requirements for which are contained in standard EN 175. Eye-protectors fitted with prescription lenses are not excluded from the field of application.

The function of eye-protectors is to provide protection against:

  • Impacts of different severities
  • Optical radiations
  • Molten metals and hot solids
  • Droplets and splashes
  • Dust and gases
  • Short circuit electric arc

The standard ensures consistency and minimum safety requirements are reached on the following:

  • General construction – made for comfort and durability
  • Field of vision and optical requirements
  • Resistance to ageing, corrosion and ignition
