Practical Considerations

Welding Parameters
Some electrodes will operate satisfactorily on AC or DC current and for AC operation, manufacturers will recommend a minimum OCV (Open Circuit Voltage) in order to initiate a welding arc with the electrode.
Welding Positions
A large number of electrodes will operate in all welding positions except vertical-down, while some are restricted to one or two specific positions, usually dictated by coating type and diameter. Some electrodes are designed to operate successfully in all positions. Each size of each particular electrode will have an operating range of welding current, and operating outside this range will lead to difficulty in striking, instability, poor appearance, and no guarantee of mechanical properties. Adherence to recommended welding speeds is also important if good fusion, and correct bead size and shape are to be obtained.
